Live Reactions to the First Round of the 2018 NFL DRAFT

So for the first round of the draft this year I wanted to do something special that I haven't done before. As the first rounds progresses I will be updating this with my reactions and comments to picks, rumors, and any of the other fun stuff that goes on during the draft. Let's buckle and get ready for the best day of the year.

  • No matter who the Browns pick first overall, I am certain I will hate it just because of the stigma of the Browns. That said, I have a lot of faith in John Dorsey and Elliot Wolf
  • Baker Mayfield - Cleveland Browns, Pick 1
    •  WOW. I didn't think that they would actually do it but damn do I love it. Dorsey and Wolf have some balls. Love to see him play with the weapons that the Browns have brought together. Let's see how many times Hue Jackson benches him this year.
  •  Saquon Barkley - New York Giants, 2nd Pick
    • LET'SSSSS GOOOOOOOO. Bae-quon is going to New York! It's probably a mistake not to invest in your future, especially if your going to bench Eli for Geno Smith, but Saquon is a can't miss prospect that will light up the NFL on this offense.
  • Sam Darnold - New York Jets, 3rd Pick
    • Jets are playing it safe here. He may be the best rookie QB next year but may not be the best in 5 years. At least they didn't take Allen.
  • Denzel Ward - Cleveland Browns, 4th Pick
    • Browns gonna Browns.
  • Bradley Chubb - Denver Broncos, 5th Pick
    • I am very scared of that defensive line now, shit man. I guess Elway has a lot of faith in one year wonder Case Keenum.
  • Quenton Nelson - Indianapolis Colts, 6th Pick
    • The Colts actually care about protecting Luck, absolutely love this pick.
  • Josh Allen - Buffalo Bills, 7th Pick
    • Yikes... I don't like this pick at all, especially trading up to get him. Hopefully he can develop but I just don't think he will be able to in Buffalo. Prove me wrong Josh.
  • Roquan Smith - Chicago Bears, 8th Pick
    • Mike Singletary anyone? Not quite but will be great for Chicago.
  • Mike McGlinchey - San Francisco 49ers, 9th Pick
    • I like that the 49ers found their replacement for Joe Staley and are investing in protection for Jimmy Garoppolo.
  • Josh Rosen - Arizona Cardinals, 10th Pick
    • LOVE IT. Arizona gets the best QB in this class and set themselves up for the future. Not to mention they barely gave up anything to get him.
  • Minkah Fitzpatrick - Miami Dolphins, 11th pick
    • Minkah is a great safety and an even better leader for the defense, fits a major need too. Great pick.
  • Vita Vea - Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 12th Pick
    • Big guy filling a big need for Tampa. An underrated prospect that can eat up gaps along the line.
  • Da'Ron Payne - Washington Redskins, 13th Pick
    • Vita isn't there so why not get the next best thing? Because it's a big reach, that's why.
  • Marcus Davenport - New Orleans Saints, 14th Pick
    • This is a bit rich for my tastes but if he works out like their rookies last year then this will be a great pick.
  • Kolton Miller - Oakland Raiders, 15th Pick
    • Fantastic pick, love that the Raiders are strengthening I huge hole on offense at RT.
  • Tremaine Edmunds - Buffalo Bills, 16th Pick
    • Amazing value at this pick, a top ten talent that fills a big need for them.
  • Derwin James - San Diego Chargers, 17th Pick
    • Another great value pick filling a huge need. Ditto.
    • The Chargers defense is really shaping up nicely with key players in every position.
Day 2 Edit:
So I drank a bit to much at this point in the draft and got distracted from updating this so I'm just going to be writing up a few points that I want to make. Josh and I are going to be talking about these on the podcast tonight so don't forget to listen in.
  • The Cowboys found their Sean Lee 2.0 but now have the most injury prone linebacking core in the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised if they just use Leighton Vander-Esh as replacement parts.
    • With Jason Witten retiring and Dez gone, look for a WR in round 2 or possibly 3.
  • Mike Vrabel and the Titans still got his star linebacker in the model of himself in Rashaan Evans.
  • Patriots are going all in on protecting Brady with Isiah Wynn at pick 23 and trading for Trent Brown from the 49ers.
  • Ravens needed a TE but  Hayden Hurst seems like a reach here.
  • Falcons picked up another Alabama WR in Calvin Ridley, best receiver available but go figure.
  • Seahawks, what are you doing? Rashaad Penny was my 6th RB and didn't expect him to go until the late 3rd early 4th. Who is going to block for him and why draft another RB to crowd your backfield? This team is imploding and my wild prediction is that they finish 3rd in the division this year.
  • Terrelle Edmunds is a guy I am going to talk a lot about on the podcast. His coach at V-Tech said he was a better player than his brother and the best on the team but he doesn't really fit a big need now that the Steelers signed Morgan Burnett. I think he will primarily used as a nickel linebacker but he doesn't have the coverage skills to be a 3-down player early on. I have the upmost trust in the Steelers scouts and front office so I am excited to see how they utilize him.
    • Also love the Martavis Bryant trade for a 3rd round pick from the Raiders. He wouldn't have resigned after this year and the value is better than anything I would have believed they could have gotten for him. Definitely look for the Steelers to look for a WR over the next two days. Good trade for both teams.
  • Jags just want to kill opposing QBs with their defensive line. Tavern Bryan wont be a starter this year but will get a lot of snaps.
  • The Patriots taking Sony Michel is intriguing but they now have 5 RBs in that backfield that would get serious snaps on most teams. Doesn't seem like a very Belichick pick but he knows what hes doing.
  • As a Steelers fan I love that the Ravens traded up for Lamar Jackson. I personally don't believe in how well he will transition to the NFL but if he can then this is a tremendous value, especially being able to get a 5th year of control for their future QB.
10 Best Available for Round 2:
  • Josh Jackson - CB, Iowa
  • Connor Williams - OT, Texas
  • Harold Landry - Edge, Boston College
  • Derrius Guice - RB, LSU
  • Will Hernadez - OG, UTEP
  • Mike Gesicki - TE, Penn State
  • James Daniels - OG, Iowa
  • Sam Hubbard - Edge, Ohio State
  • Isiah Oliver - CB, Colorado
